| Ok, so for the last few weeks I have been feeling rather "Perryish" for lack of better words. I have been thinking pretty hard about the nature of our society as a whole. The musings were piqued by me thinking to myself... "self"... you are paying just at four hundred dollars a month just to have a roof over your head and a place to keep your stuff. I am spending a bit more that one quarter of what I earn just on an apartment. That is REDICULOUS!! I mean, seriously, when did we as a society end up shelling out one entire weeks pay to live somewhere? So... I started thinking. How cheaply could I live, and still function pretty normally in society, as close to on my own (i.e. with as little mooching off the parents as possible)? Well, first what basics do I need? Shelter, electricity, a fixed location, a mailbox, showers, and facilities. Ok, how many of those things can I get for free? Shelter: Sir Reggie. I wee bit cramped but serviceable, and most defiantly free. Also, my tent. Facilities: Wally World's open 24/7 and is within a twenty minute drive of practically anywhere in the United States. Electricity: car adaptor. Ok not exactly free but close. Showers: probably going to have to pay for these. However, the Rush / Y is only around 30ish dollars a month and also (at least the Rush) 24/7 There may be other smaller gyms with showers that are considerably cheaper. They may also have a locker available for rent to keep my nice cloths in. Mailbox: this is part of where minimal parental bumming comes in Fixed location: Hm... tricky... would have to find somewhere like pocket except private and work out a deal with the owners or something also this could cost more gas as my morning commute would probably be longer. Bowertopia is absolutely out of the question. Mainly because I might as well be living there if I'm parking my truck there every night. And I just won't move back home / live on the compound. One of the biggest problems I ran into when trying to work this out was, "what do I do with all my stuff"? I have a good bit of stuff, all of which I like. This means storing it, erg . Average 5x10 is around one-hundred dollars a month. If I'm going to pay one-hundred dollars a month to keep my stuff stored I may as well live with it. So, maybe a bit more parental bummage is in order. Say 40ish bucks a month to store my stuff in some corner of Bowertopia. Winter would be a bit harder. I'd have to get one of those subzero sleeping bags and have a place where I could make a fire. I have been weighing the major pros and cons and have come up with these so far: Cons: No fridge, no place to have people over (of course I've been at my apt for near three months and haven't had anyone over), not very comfortable or convenient. Pros: Freaking cheap!!!!! very cost effective!!!! absurdly inexpensive!!!! Over all, with a Rush membership and stuff stored at Bowertopia, I could live for seventy dollars a month!! A cost savings of a whopping 330$. So... suffice it to say that I'm seriously considering "living in a van down by the river" |
